#Nu jazz #imaginary soundtracks...

Nilok4tet is a band led by double bass player Colin Jore.
>>The repertoire consists entirely of original compositions, gleaning hybrid forms from jazz culture and mixing diverse rhythms, mainly inspired from African-American music and jungle grooves from the 1990s.
>>This instrumental repertoire was partly inspired by the suggestive power of film scores. Initially designed on a laptop and a double bass, it mainly relied on samples, to which acoustic parts were added, using the tenor saxophone and the transverse flute in particular.
>>Then, in October 2013, encouraged by his accomplice, drummer Fabien Duscombs, he formed a quartet with pianist / keyboardist / sound chemist Bastien Andrieu and uncommon multi-instrumentist Yvan Picault on the tenor saxophone, the bass clarinet, and the flute.
This new line up allowed the music to become more pared down and today, apart from a taste for suggestive atmospheres, little remains of the initial samples, which means that the music can develop more freely, alternating spells of groove and invigorating improvisations with more “contemplative” or psychedelic phases and producing an atmosphere that is both bracing and trippy.

In 2015, Xavier Gainche replaced Bastien Andrieu, who left the band to venture off into new horizons.
On stage, Colin Jore’s solidly-built compositions rely on a wide range of sounds – drums, Fender Rhodes, organ, double bass, bass, tenor sax, clarinet, and flute – and are cornerstones on which a true adventure can begin. In search of collective density, the live performances strongly favour a band-oriented approach, yet they do not preclude solos, which are not necessarily scripted.

Wonder Plane Part 1. Self-produced 5-track EP

Wonder Plane Part 1 was recorded in June 2014 after a series of concerts and displays much spontaneity. It was the first sketch of the current set, which has since evolved as the band has accumulated tours and residencies.

In late 2016, a new repertoire was born, with French trombonist Daniel Zimmermann as guest. New compositions were created and a few older pieces were rearranged: The 5tet formula was born.
After a creation residency at the “Chez Lily” Café Culturel in the French Pyrenees (www.lilygerm.com), the premiere took place at the prestigious “Salle bleue  – Espace Croix Baragnon” in Toulouse, France, in January 2017. The project has received financial support from the Occitanie Region, the Departmental Council of Haute Garonne, and the Spedidam, a French copyright collecting society.
In 2017, aside from concerts, activity focused on distributing and recording the 5tet’s album with Daniel Zimmermann.

* October 2013: Nilok4tet was formed for a premiere at the Mandala Jazz Club in Toulouse, France (the club has since been renamed Le Taquin).
* 2014: the band toured the South-West of France and recorded a self-produced 5-track EP in June with Bastien Andrieu. The record was released in December 2014.
* 2015: the band toured the South-West of France with Xavier Gainche on keyboards and played at the Jazz sur son 31 Festival.
* 2016: new tour in the South-West in venues like "Jazz MDA" in Tarbes and the “Les Nuits et les Jours de Querbes” Festival. Creation residence with Daniel Zimmermann.
* 2017: Premiere of the repertoire with Daniel Zimmermann at the “Salle bleue  – Espace Croix Baragnon” in Toulouse, France, in January. Concerts as a 5tet in October.
* 2018: 4tet gigs, recording sessions in Toulouse
* 2019: 5tet gigs, album issue
